Notes
Reachings is my first composition for large orchestra. I approached it without a strict or predetermined structure. Instead, I let the music unfold narratively, sensing what kind of music materializes next. In this way, the form emerged gradually, shaped by the process itself.
Attuning to how the music advanced, I began to sense a feeling of reaching toward something — an idea that grew into the work’s central theme.
What interested me most was the sensation that arises when we perceive music coming closer to something. For me, Reachings became about being on a journey to somewhere without knowing where: a sense of moving forward, yet never entirely certain of the endpoint. Just as the music seems to arrive, it is drawn back or takes an unexpected turn. The essence lies not in reaching a final goal, but in the journey itself.
“The fresh quality of music reaches the very end of the piece.”

Reviews
"Reachings struck me by its determined sense of formal plan and its realization. The music is directional, yet surprising. "
KAIJA SAARIAHO,
THE JUDGE OF TORU TAKEMITSU COMPOSITION AWARD, 31.5.2015
"An intense concentration is carrying the music through the work. The music has an urge to advance, but it is done under a control so that the musical energy is well balanced, and the music breathes naturally. "
KAIJA SAARIAHO,
THE JUDGE OF TORU TAKEMITSU COMPOSITION AWARD, 31.5.2015
"The range of different musical characters is large and emotionally fulfilling. The fresh quality of music reaches the very end of the piece. The orchestration is effective throughout and the score enjoyable to read in its clarity”
